Ichimatsu mon’you is a very old traditional pattern in Japan since the Meiji period. It was named after the mid- 1800 Kabuki actor, Sanokawa Ichimatsu, who used the pattern on his trousers. The Checkered board design has continued to inspire many designers from VANS to Givenchy.
