Article: Custom Kimono Head Covers Handmade from Japanese Fabrics

Four custom head covers handmade from Japanese kimono fabrics for a returning Arta Asiatica customer

Custom Kimono Head Covers Handmade from Japanese Fabrics

There is something especially meaningful about creating a custom piece for someone who comes back again and again.

Recently, one of my returning customers reached out to Arta Asiatica for her third custom order. This time, she was looking for more of the handmade head covers I had previously created for her.

What started as a request for two eventually became something much more fun: after I sent her a selection of Japanese fabrics to choose from, she loved them so much that she wanted them all.

After checking the available fabric and determining which pieces had enough material for the full design, I created four custom head covers, each with its own completely different character.

Choosing the Japanese Fabrics

For custom orders, one of my favorite parts is helping the customer choose the fabric.

For this set, the final selection included four Japanese kimono fabrics in very different colors and patterns: a soft purple geometric design, a dark traditional motif, a muted reddish-pink fabric, and a cream kimono fabric decorated with delicate floral linework and colorful fan motifs.

Because kimono fabrics often come in limited quantities and in some cases must be carefully removed from an existing garment. I have to work with the material that is available rather than simply cutting from a new bolt of fabric.

That means every custom piece can be slightly different.

And honestly, that is part of what I love about working with Japanese textiles.

From Kimono Fabric to Head Cover

Before I could begin sewing, the kimono fabrics had to be carefully prepared and inspected so I could determine the best placement for each pattern.

I wanted the finished head covers to showcase the fabric while still being comfortable and practical to wear.

Each piece was individually cut, sewn, gathered, and finished by hand in my small studio.

The long ties allow the head cover to be secured comfortably while also creating a beautiful draped detail at the back.

Because these were custom-made, I could also take into account feedback from the customer's previous order and make adjustments based on what worked best for her.

Four Completely Different Finished Pieces

Although all four head covers use the same basic design, the fabrics make each one feel completely different.

The purple version feels subtle and traditional, while the dark patterned fabric gives the design a much bolder look. The dusty pink version is simple and understated, and the cream kimono fabric became the most detailed of the four, with small sections of traditional Japanese motifs appearing throughout the head cover and ties.

This is one of the reasons I enjoy custom work so much.

The same design can take on an entirely different personality depending on the textile.

A Third Custom Order

Being asked to create something once is already special, but having someone return for a third custom order means a great deal to me as a small business owner.

Arta Asiatica began with the idea of sharing the beauty of Japanese fabrics in ways that can be enjoyed and worn today. Custom projects allow me to take that idea even further by creating something specifically for one person.

And seeing these four pieces finished together made this project especially satisfying.

Interested in a Custom Arta Asiatica Piece?

I accept custom orders for one-of-a-kind pieces using Japanese fabrics, including accessories, apparel, and other special projects depending on the design and fabric availability.

If you have a particular color, fabric, accessory, or idea in mind, feel free to send me a message through Instagram or contact me through Arta Asiatica.

Because many of the fabrics I work with are vintage, reclaimed, or available only in small quantities, custom pieces are always subject to fabric availability.

Each one is made individually, in small quantities, with the goal of giving beautiful Japanese textiles another life.
